Initially, yes, but perhaps this was the only true way to show dramatically how both sides suffered equally. Indeed, how both families, especially the mothers, coped with a lack of news and, in the absence of this, believing their sons would never return. That did surprise. It beggars belief that the aggressor in this conflict would have been so self-deprecating and mocking.

From episode two, however, the drama moved to the trenches, and found its soul. We were plunged into the dark world of the younger soldier, some only barely 16, unable to mature quickly enough to absorb the horrifying reality before their eyes. One of the more poignant scenes, which was actually based on events at Gallipoli, involved a truce in the which combatants were allowed to gather the dead.
Another touching moments saw the Allies singing around the piano in the trenches before meeting the enemy. So to episode five, with an ending to rival the final episode of Blackadder.
The Passing Bells was one of the saddest war dramas we have seen on television. If only she would concentrate on the spuds. Most of the servants have been taken by the little reported Downton buy-to-let boom.

Mrs Patmore kicked it off, using her legacy to buy her little cottage, which she is now renovating. Then Carson, not to be outdone, invited his housekeeper, Mrs Hughes to share in their own buy-to-let enterprise. Perhaps it was all a euphemism. Carson, and his wicked ways.

Peyton , but I still enjoyed them even if I wasn't as invested in what happened to them. I particularly appreciated how the American nephew of Lady Greville — at first treated very condescendingly by his English relatives — becomes a valued member of the family.
Rock, although he lived in England as a child, did not read the memo that American characters are supposed to be loud, crude, and talk about money all the time. What I disliked : Some of the story lines were more convincing than others. Or that the American cousin falls in love with the clueless housemaid, although the point is meant to be that the war and nursing gave her status and broke down the barriers between them. Source : My Goodreads friend Cathy brought this author to my attention and I got the first book from the library.

Having read many similar books, I am surprised I had never come across it before. I am glad that HarperCollins has brought the whole trilogy back into print with attractive covers.
I hope he and his wife enjoy it!
